Pfizer, the drug maker that makes Viagra, is launching its own version of the drug in the United States.
The little blue pill is in a new trial that will see it deliver a boost to a large market of impotence drugs that have long been used to treat a form of benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH.
Pfizer will be testing the new version of the pill in the U. S. for about a year, starting May 22. The company says it expects that the drug will have a lower risk of causing an adverse side effect compared to older, widely used older drugs, such as Viagra.
The new impotence drug is a type of drug called a "blue pill," which means that it has a similar mechanism of action as older drugs.
The drug has not been approved by the U. Food and Drug Administration for use in women. But the Food and Drug Administration has already rejected some older impotence drugs, including Viagra and Cialis.
"We are very pleased with the development of this new formulation of the Viagra drug," said Scott Gottlieb, Pfizer's vice president of pharmaceuticals. "This product will be a major milestone in the history of the company."
The new Viagra pill, which has been available for a few years, is the first drug approved specifically for women. The FDA has rejected a proposal from Pharmacia and its sister company, Boehringer Ingelheim, that the drug be marketed under the name Revatio.
The new drug is called Viagra.
The drugmaker has said the FDA rejected it twice in the past. Last May it rejected a similar effort last year by Pharmacia, which the company said was based on inconclusive data.

A German pharmaceutical company is testing the new drug, called L'Oréal, in the U. in the wake of a study in which people who take the drug have a slightly lower risk of BPH than those who do not take it.
The U. Food and Drug Administration said it has not yet approved a similar version of the drug. It is not yet clear how much of the new drug will be available in the U.
A generic version of the drug, called Viagra, is also being studied for its ability to lower the risk of BPH.
The company is developing the product as a single-dose treatment. That drug, a "blue pill," is marketed as Viagra because the brand name is identical to the name of the drug's active ingredient, sildenafil citrate, and it is often sold under the brand name Revatio, the maker of the drug.
But the FDA is unlikely to approve a new drug that is a single-dose treatment for a condition where the body has to work for an average of 20 minutes to get an erection.
L'Oréal has not responded to an email from AP on Thursday about the development of the drug.
Shares in the drugmaker were down 0.3 percent on a daily basis as of June 30, as were its earnings.
